Increase Revenue Opportunities Through Improved Door to Drug Time

The American Heart Association confers its highest awards to hospitals that are able to treat at least 75 percent of acute ischemic stroke patients who receive IV tPA within 60 minutes of arrival, and at least 50 percent of these within 45 minutes of arrival. Accurately track door to drug times for stroke patients and push this information out to providers on their mobile devices to keep this metric front of mind. Hospitals that can increase their referrals by about 50 stroke patients a year due to such awards can see their operating profits jump by $150,000 to $250,000.

Improve Quality and Mortality Rates

A major part of controlling quality within a health system is reducing local care variation. For example, many health systems see significant differences in mortality rates for stroke patients across hospitals, or even across different providers. The first step is to track, measure, and identify the variation. Then, by pushing the data out to the team and raising awareness of higher mortality indices, protocols and processes can be improved and mortality rates can be decreased over time.

Benchmarking Financial Performance

Many hospitals may believe they are doing well based on the volume of neuro-intervention cases they perform. However, they may find that their contribution margins are low when compared to other facilities. Without the ability to drill down by procedure and provider, meaningful change is difficult. Variations among providers in terms of contribution margins typically highlight variations in physician behavior. Identify areas of improvement and work with providers to help them improve documentation and coding to better capture revenues.
