GS1-128 Barcodes: Are You Ready?

By John Nicholls

GS1-128 barcodes, sometimes referred to as “healthcare barcodes,” are quickly becoming the standard for inventory product management. This industry shift has been brewing for some time now, although many vendors have been inconsistent in terms of conversion. Most vendors use Code 3 of 9 (codes that typically have a plus symbol in the front), UPC formats, or other types of barcode configurations.

The GS1-128 barcode is the industry standard because it allows manufacturers to include a variety of data aside from the item number for inventory tracking and management. Users can view expiration dates, batch or lot numbers, and other critical information.

LUMEDX’s inventory solution has used the GS1-128 format for years, ensuring that our customers are able to track the full inventory information that they need. Our solution currently supports the item number (GTIN) portion of the GS1-128 barcode.

To start using GS1-128 barcodes, you can install an updated support module – at no cost to you. With no hardware changes or workflow modifications required, your hospital can seamlessly switch over to using the GS1-128 format today.*
