Analytics Use Case Contest winners announced

Close to 50 LUMEDX customers gathered October. 22 for the annual Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) User Group conference in New Orleans for product updates and information, tips and tricks, and to learn from one another as the first-ever Analytics Use Case Contest results were announced.

As a nod to the Advances in Quality and Outcomes (AQO): A Data Managers Meeting being held the following day, both contest winners focused on process improvements that used data analytics.

Pam Raney, RN, BSN, CVRN-BC, at CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. They have been using the Adult Cardiac Surgery content pack since 2015 and have leveraged its analytics capabilities with the isolated CABG patient population to improve the percentage weaned from the ventilator within six hours, decrease the initial ICU length of stay (LOS), and decrease the renal failure rate.

“Analytics are your friend! Run reports monthly and quarterly to verify accuracy of your data and to see if there are any trends that need to be further assessed,” Raney says. “Also, utilize queries that have already been created and then you can you use them as your base to add items you need to customize to your specific needs.”

Pam Aleck, MSN, RN, is the Manager of Clinical Specialty Data/Quality for eight cardiovascular registries and supervises 15 abstractors at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, FL. Her submission outlined the manual spreadsheet and scorecard she created for the STS Adult Cardiac, Thoracic Surgery, and Cath PCI content packs.

“By having a standardized way to view our data, that is quick, easy to use and understand, the abstractors and clinical staff can run these reports in real time. The patient list now serves as a single source across the entire system, and it contains comments from the abstractor regarding each case for any potential fallouts,” says Aleck. “This has been instrumental for us to maintain our star rating for nine consecutive reporting periods.”

Each winner received a $50 gift card. The use cases will be shared in the User Forum and during upcoming User Group calls for discussion.
