Build a Strategic IT Roadmap
Do you know where your heart program is going? No doubt the department
has a three to five year strategic business plan, which includes
quality improvement targets, growth projections, case mix, market
share, financial performance goals and the like. And you will probably
have a good handle on what the department plans to spend next year
on information technology. But in our experience, very few heart
centers have a long-term cardiovascular IT plan to support their
strategic business goals.
Such a plan would provide a three to five year roadmap, detailing
the way in which technology solutions will be implemented incrementally
over time to help stakeholders realize their clinical and business
targets. Of course, the roadmap will be fully compatible with the
hospital’s enterprise IT plan. And each solution will be
cost-justified, linked directly to the value-payoff. So everyone
will share the same vision and have “bought in” – physicians,
staff, administrators, and senior leadership.
